Drivers of Recurring Seasonal Cycle of Glacier Calving Styles and Patterns

چکیده

Calving is a crucial process for the mass loss of outlet glaciers draining Greenland ice sheet. Moreover, due to lack observations, calving contributes large uncertainties in current glacier flow models and projections. Here we investigate frequency, volume style events by using high-resolution terrestrial radar interferometer (TRI) data from six field campaigns, continuous daily hourly time-lapse images over 6 years 10-s recorded during two campaigns. The results demonstrate that front Eqip Sermia, fast flowing, highly crevassed West Greenland, follows clear seasonal cycle showing distinct pattern areas with subglacial discharge plumes, shallow bed topography presence retreat proglacial mélange. event volume, frequency vary strongly time depending on state cycle. Strong spatial differences between three distinctive sectors differing topography, water depth slope were observed. A increase activity occurs early melt season simultaneously when mélange disappears meltwater plumes become visible at fjord surface adjacent front. While reduced observed areas, accelerated occurred locations plumes. With emergence these beginning season, larger full thickness occur likely undercutting Later similar neighboring suggesting less important calving. highlight significance geometry, temporal variability styles.

Distinct patterns of seasonal Greenland glacier velocity

Predicting Greenland Ice Sheet mass loss due to ice dynamics requires a complete understanding of spatiotemporal velocity fluctuations and related control mechanisms. We present a 5 year record of seasonal velocity measurements for 55 marine-terminating glaciers distributed around the ice sheet margin, along with ice-front position and runoff data sets for each glacier. Among glaciers with subs...

Dynamics of glacier calving at the ungrounded margin of Helheim Glacier, southeast Greenland

During summer 2013 we installed a network of 19 GPS nodes at the ungrounded margin of Helheim Glacier in southeast Greenland together with three cameras to study iceberg calving mechanisms. The network collected data at rates up to every 7 s and was designed to be robust to loss of nodes as the glacier calved. Data collection covered 55 days, and many nodes survived in locations right at the gl...
